Protecting the Integrity of Your Insulated Aerial Devices

Clean Fiberglass

At Utility Sales & Service, Inc., we emphasize the importance of regular maintenance on these units to keep your crews safe and equipment compliant.

OSHA defines an insulated aerial device as “an aerial device designed for work on energized lines and apparatus” (CFR 1910.67). These devices are often recognized by their fiberglass booms and components — but always verify this via the data placard.

At Utility Sales & Service, Inc., we emphasize the importance of regular maintenance on these units to keep your crews safe and equipment compliant. Fiberglass booms and their gel-coat surfaces are non-conductive, but over time, grease, dirt, and debris can compromise insulating performance. Moisture on an unwaxed surface can bridge the insulating gap — putting your team at risk.

Cleaning Your Fiberglass Components

Use a light degreaser and gently scrub the surface with a rag or ultra-fine pad (e.g., 3M Scotch-Brite #7448). Take care not to damage the gel coat. All residue must be fully removed before applying wax.

Key areas to clean and wax:

  • Inner boom
  • Electrostatic guard (upper boom)
  • Lower boom insert
  • Compensation link
  • Jib pole (if equipped)

Recommended Wax

For fiberglass-specific protection, USSI stocks Eaton® Cooper Power Series Kearney™ Fiberglass Cleaner/Wax (Part #131840). This product cleans and seals your booms with a glossy, water-resistant finish. Apply with a rag and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Remove excess wax thoroughly.
