Feb. 2026 Tech Tip: Preparing for Annual Inspections
Preparing a unit for its annual inspection is an easy process and it greatly helps the inspector complete a thorough and efficient inspection. This ensures your unit gets back on the road quickly and safely!
Information to consider prior to scheduling an annual inspection:
- Which types and level of inspections fit best?
- Standard Annual Inspection or Premium Annual Inspection for an aerial lift, digger derrick or crane.
- Dielectric testing of the upper/lower boom for insulated units.
- Rotation bearing Bolt torque check.
- Annual DOT chassis inspection.
- Aerial ANSI structural test (Once the unit is 15 years old, then every 10 years after).
- Are there any additional inspection, planned maintenance or service items that should be addressed during the annual inspection?
- Hydraulic filter(s) replacement.
- Hydraulic fluid spectrochemical analysis.
- Dielectric testing of accessories (jib, hydraulic tools, bucket liner).
- Any other known repairs that may be made at the time of inspection.

Preparation prior to the inspection date:
- The operator’s and maintenance manuals should be placed in the cab, if available.
- If equipped, the hydraulic jib should be installed on the unit.
- Hydraulic jibs are function tested and inspected during an annual inspection, having them installed helps our technicians stay efficient.
- Hydraulic jibs are function tested and inspected during an annual inspection, having them installed helps our technicians stay efficient.
- Proper preparation of the bucket and liner, if equipped.
- All tools, materials and debris should be removed from the bucket to allow full inspection of the interior.
- For inspection at USSI’s facility, if a bucket liner is installed it will be removed for thorough bucket inspection and for dielectric testing, if applicable.
- For inspections at the customer location, please have the liners removed from the aerial prior to
inspection, as field lifting capabilities are limited.
- Please clear the bed of the truck of any large parts, tools, or equipment.
- The pedestal base and machine mount are inspected during the annual inspection. Having the bed of the truck cleared out allows our technicians best access to these critical components.

Proper preparation will help greatly to ensure your inspections are performed thoroughly with little delay or additional expense.
